More than 25 years of making art and film.

Jason Kendall played college football at North Greenville, went to art school in Florida before landing in New York two months before 9/11, and then did his post-graduate work at NYU before coming home to South Carolina.

kendallprojects began in 1999 as a home for his multimedia performance work, and kendallprojects Media & Design was founded in 2018. After Covid it turned to cinematic sports documentaries, from The Next Chapter: Ridge View Football Film in 2022 to Leading the Charge: The Making of Anderson Football (2023).

UNDERESTIMATED exists because he took the risk to make it on his own.

There are still places in the country where Friday night high school football is as sacred as going to church on Sunday morning.

Hopkins, South Carolina is still one of these places.

The story

Everything earned.
Nothing given.

In the spring of 2020, as the world shut its doors, Coach Marlin Taylor went to the roots and found his group. Five years later, 25 seniors who came up together get one last season to bring the name back. Undersized. Coming from behind. Nobody has them on the map.

This is their season, inside the Diamond Mine: the heat, the iron, the parents who feed them, the coaches who coach them hard and love them harder, and the young men who have to decide what their story is going to say.

The place

Hopkins,
South Carolina.

“Drive beyond the edges of metropolitan Columbia, where the buildings begin to thin and the roads stretch a little farther between them. Follow the highway past rows of pine trees and weathered porches that have been standing watch long before the highway ever arrived. Eventually you find yourself in Hopkins, home of the Diamond Hornets.”

“Then came 1991. The Diamonds fought their way to the title game, and they lost. For a program built on the memory of Mooney Player's dynasty, that loss cut deep. The years that followed were leaner, quieter. The kind of quiet a town remembers because it used to be so loud.”

He went to the roots: the Pop Warner fields, the middle schools, the living rooms of families who have bled black and gold for generations. He put coaches and players at the same breakfast table after practice.

They came up together: Pop Warner fields, middle school hallways, the same weight room at 6 a.m. It shows in the hallway. And it shows on Friday night, when they play for each other, not just themselves.
